The 7 College Football Teams That Control Their Own Destiny

first_imgCFB Playoff logo promotion.Twitter/Playoff CFB PlayoffTwitter/PlayoffTuesday night, the College Football Playoff committee unveiled its third set of rankings, which features no changes from 1-5, but a major shakeup after. Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Iowa held serve, but a number of teams, including Oklahoma, made major moves. At this point, while there is still a great deal of football to be played, a few things are obvious. There are seven teams that are in complete control of their own destiny. What does that really mean? If these seven teams win out, they’re locks for the College Football Playoff – no question. These squads are either undefeated or are involved in virtual play-in games that will knock out other contenders. The two teams with the best playoff odds that don’t control their own destiny? That’d be Oklahoma, which, given its loss to Texas, would need a little help to get in with an 11-1 record, and Notre Dame, which won’t have the luxury of claiming a conference championship, should it also finish with an 11-1 mark. Oddly enough, there are many who believe that the last playoff spot could come down to the Sooners and the Irish. Here are the seven teams that control their own destiny.7 Teams: Clemson >>>Pages: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8last_img read more

Big 10 Commissioner Getting Crushed For What He Said Today

first_imgOhio State football players carrying Big Ten signs.INDIANAPOLIS, IN – DECEMBER 02: The Ohio State Buckeyes celebrate after their 27-21 win over the Wisconsin Badgers during the Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 2, 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)There are times when it’s appropriate to show good sportsmanship, and times when you should stand up for what you believe in.For Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney, Ohio State’s Big Ten Championship win and subsequent snub from the College Football Playoff should have been the latter.Following the new College Football Playoff ranking, which saw Ohio State snubbed for Notre Dame and Oklahoma, Delaney told The Athletic that he was “not frustrated” by the ranking.“Obviously would love to be in system every year but have respect for those chosen and offer sincere congratulations to players and coaches at Alabama, Clemson, ND and OU.”“[We are] proud of our teams, players and coaches in 2018. We look forward not backwards and appreciate the great conference competition/conference race. … We define ourselves, and CFP does its job with a four-team field.”While certainly intended to show good sportsmanship, the effect that the statement had on fans of the Buckeyes and Big Ten alike was poorly-received.Unreal. Fight for your league, Jim.https://t.co/ZEaPD93To0— Eleven Warriors (@11W) December 2, 2018If he’s not pissed off about his champion not being picked two years in a row, why’s he even the commissioner???? He should be fighting for all of his teams and making a case for them! That’s his job. Fight for conference and make a case for the top teams. What a joke!— Off To Indy! ⭕️????⭕️ (@tshay77) December 2, 2018Since the inception of the College Football Playoff in 2014, only three Big Ten teams have made it into the tournament.Notably, the Big Ten champion has been snubbed in each of the last three seasons.Even though Ohio State made it in in the 2016-17 edition, it was Penn State that won the conference title that year.last_img read more

Emails Sent Between Florida, UCF Football Have Been Revealed

first_imgFlorida Gators fans cheering during a home game.NASHVILLE, TN – OCTOBER 01: Hundreds of fans of the Florida Gators cheer after a Gator filed goal against the Vanderbilt Commodores during the first half at Vanderbilt Stadium on October 1, 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Frederick Breedon/Getty Images)Emails sent between Florida and UCF’s athletic directors regarding a potential non-conference football series have been obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.Much was made last week about a potential series between the Gators and the Knights, with Florida head coach Dan Mullen sending a strong message to UCF.“I think we offered them a two-for-one like we do with most schools in their position, which is actually really a good deal,” Mullen said. “They have the opportunity to have an SEC school play at their place. It would potentially be a big deal for them. I know I’ve done it that way. … If they want to try and toughen their schedule, that would be great, a good opportunity for them if they want take it. It’s up to them.”The Orlando Sentinel has since obtained some emails between Florida and UCF’s athletic directors.Florida is not interested in playing in a home-and-home series. UCF, meanwhile, isn’t interested in playing in a two-for-one series.“UF isn’t in the market for home-and-home or a neutral site games against non-Autonomy 5 opponents,” Florida’s Scott Stricklin wrote. “However, we would be open to a series similar to what we’ve agreed to with USF … two games in Gainesville and one in Orlando. We are in need of a home opener for the 2022 season, so the 9/3/2022 date you mention would be a perfect date to begin the series, and we can fill in the remaining games from there.”White then seemed to take umbrage with Stricklin grouping UCF in with other “non-Autonomy 5 opponents” and sent a lengthy email urging Stricklin to help him change an unfair system.“You mention not playing a neutral site contest versus a non-autonomy 5 opponent, but a UF vs. UCF game held in our state would certainly be a sellout, which would be a positive for both of us financially,” UCF’s Danny White wrote. “I think that our team has shown on the field that we are far from a typical ‘non-autonomy 5’ opponent.”A Florida-UCF non-conference series would be a lot of fun to watch, but the Gators probably do have more to lose than the Knights, so it’s not surprising that a home-and-home might not happen. You can view the full exchange here.last_img read more

(Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence celebrated the national championship with teammates yesterday at the White House. As you probably know by now, Lawrence and the Tigers dined on fast food, courtesy of President Trump. With the government partially shut down, Trump bought dinner for the Clemson contingent, serving hamburgers, french fries, salads and pizza from various fast food establishments. It was certainly a different kind of White House cuisine, but Lawrence told TMZ after the event that he “loved” the spread.“It was awesome,” Lawrence told us while taking pics with Clemson fans … “We had McDonalds and everything. It was good!”Another fan asked Lawrence how many times he plans on returning to the White House — to which he replied, “Hopefully, a few more!”Lawrence may have been a fan of Trump’s menu, but he did take time out on Twitter to point out that a meme that is circulating containing a supposed quote of his has been fabricated.I never said this by the way… I don’t know where it came from. However the trip to the White House was awesome! https://t.co/dhYzZpSNUD— Trevor Lawrence (@Trevorlawrencee) January 15, 2019Lawrence has two more years at Clemson. Trump has at least two more years in the White House. The odds of them seeing each other again?
