These squads are either undefeated or are involved in virtual play-in games that will knock out other contenders. The two teams with the best playoff odds that don’t control their own destiny? That’d be Oklahoma, which, given its loss to Texas, would need a little help to get in with an 11-1 record, and Notre Dame, which won’t have the luxury of claiming a conference championship, should it also finish with an 11-1 mark. Visakhapatnam India skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesda

By

first_imgVisakhapatnam: India skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesday threw his weight behind Rohit Sharma, saying his promotion to the opening slot in Tests could end up making the line-up “more lethal” and the stylish batsman will be given enough “space” to find his game in red-ball cricket. While Rohit is counted among the modern-day ODI greats, he has not done justice to his potential in Tests, averaging 39.62 in 27 matches. Former players, including Yuvraj Singh, praised the team management’s decision to use Rohit at the top and said he should be given a long run. “…if he does that (succeeds in the opening role), then our batting order at the top becomes more lethal. It is difficult to have a player like that to not start every time,” said Kohli on the eve of the first Test against South Africa here. Also Read – We will push hard for Kabaddi”s inclusion in 2024 Olympics: Rijiju”…if he comes into his own then the whole batting order looks a completely different batting order anywhere in the world,” added the skipper. Asked if the management is thinking of giving Rohit at least five to six Tests, Kohli said: “We are not looking to rush him. There is a different pattern you follow in India and different abroad. Opening is a spot where you have to give a player space to understand his own game. “He will be given space to find his game and come into his own.” The skipper said it would be great for the team if Rohit can play the role Virender Sehwag did in his prime while insisting that the team is not looking for any specific kind of approach from the stylish batsman.last_img read more

Women have faced inequality in our country ever since we can remember. New Delhi Telecom regulator Trai will take additi

By

first_imgNew Delhi: Telecom regulator Trai will take additional time to finalise its views on Over-The-Top (OTT) norms and issues around lawful interception and security are expected to be the key focus, an official said. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai) deliberations on the issue may take at least one more month to conclude, as it is looking at international practices and regulations around OTTs, particularly on security-related aspects. Also Read – Commercial vehicle sales to remain subdued in current fiscal: IcraOTT services refer to applications and services that are accessible over the internet and ride on an operator’s network. Skype, Viber, WhatsApp and Hike are some of the popular and widely-used OTT services. A senior Trai official said that the regulator wants to take a “practical approach” to the OTT issue. Moreover, OTT usage is also benefiting telcos given the spike in data consumption and traffic, and hence any argument about such services merely riding free on telecom networks is no longer as compelling. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 daysEconomic aspects, therefore, are not the prime focus any more, said the official. “Now largely it has boiled down to security issue…questions like how the security concerns can be addressed, how other countries have dealt with security concerns. The problem has become a little limited – it is not as big as it was, when we started,” the Trai official said. Last year, Trai had issued its consultation paper — Regulatory Framework for Over The Top Communications Services’ – to debate whether OTT players should be brought under the regulatory regime. Of late, many of these platforms have come under intense scrutiny, and the Indian government is also proposing changes in IT rules to seek greater accountability from these firms, in the backdrop of the apps being used for circulation of fake news and misinformation. While issuing its discussion paper last year, Trai had made it clear that the scope of its consultation would be regulatory issues and economic concerns pertaining to those OTT services that are same or similar to the services provided by telecom service providers (TSPs). In the consultation paper, Trai had also sought the industry’s views on which OTT services should be regarded as the same or similar to those offered by telecom operators, and if “substitutability” should be the main criteria for comparison of regulatory or licensing rules applicable to TSPs and OTT service providers. Trai has also sought industry’s opinion on whether there are issues surrounding lawful interception of OTT communication that need to be resolved in the interest of national security and whether responsibilities of OTT service providers and telecom service providers should be distinct. “Now the question is of regulatory imbalance, on the issue of lawful enforcement…This is not only regulatory imbalance, it has implications on security of the country. So the argument is now limited to security-related issues,” the TRAI official said. Trai is looking at how other nations have dealt with such issues. “Security is not just India’s concern, it is a concern for every country,” the source said adding that TraiRAI has scheduled internal presentations and is likely to finalise its view in another month or so.last_img read more

New Delhi The role of an opener in Test cricket r

By

first_imgNew Delhi: The role of an opener in Test cricket requires a different philosophy and mindset, where the ability to translate talent and intent into consistent performance is paramount, insists the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. As Rohit Sharma showed signs of fitting into Indian team management’s ‘Virender Sehwag Model’ with a hundred in his first Test as opener, Tendulkar spoke about the bigger picture of facing the new ball in traditional format. Also Read – We will push hard for Kabaddi”s inclusion in 2024 Olympics: Rijiju”It’s all about the mindset. If somebody wants to open the innings, then he needs to have a different kind of mindset,” Tendulkar told PTI in an exclusive interview. Talk about Sehwag, Tendulkar reminded that along with the mindset, it is also about ability, which Sehwag had in abundance. “Sehwag had that different mindset. Be it a ODI or Test, he would more or less play in the same manner. That aggressive nature was always there. Again, it boils down to the capability and the potential of that particular player,” said Tendulkar. Also Read – Djokovic to debut against Shapovalov at Shanghai Masters”There are number of guys, who want to be aggressive but to able to use that ammunition (aggression) consistently enough is something that Sehwag had been able to do. That number (opener) suited him. One needs to wait and see how it pans out (for Rohit),” said Tendulkar, whose world record of 200 Test appearances is unlikely to be broken anytime soon. Talking about philosophy, Tendulkar recalled that along with stupendous success, Sehwag also encountered rough patches but never changed his style. “Like for Sehwag, he opened for the first time in England and got a hundred. It brought him success but there were occasions, when he also had his share of rough patches. So it’s not the numbers that always really matter but what you bring to the table does,” he explained. Security and a sense of belonging is something that also brings the best out of any player, opined the all-time highest run scorer in Tests and ODIs. “I think security has to be there. If you look at any number, there has to be that security and one needs to feel that he belongs to the team. Players go through ups and down, but if they know that management is backing them, they tend to think differently,” he feels. Among the new crop of youngsters, Tendulkar is impressed with Hanuma Vihari’s temperament during the past few series. “You need to play Test cricket differently and real skill is tested on good bowler-friendly tracks and he has gone out and shown an ideal temperament,” Tendulkar said. “Vihari has been smart in selecting right shots to play at the right time. I have been impressed by his calmness, temperament as well as ability to absorb pressure. In Test cricket, various aspects are going to be tested and if you are sure of those things, your body language is different, which I saw in him,” said Tendulkar. The technical aspect that impressed Tendulkar was Vihari was ready to leave deliveries, a quality that’s also there in Australia’s find of Ashes Marnus Labuschagne. “In Ashes, Marnus Labuschagne is one of the top examples, he replaced Smith (as that Concussion substitute) at the Lord’s and then he stood out because I feel he was leaving the ball better than anyone else.” Tendulkar loves the concept of World Test Championship but it will only have context if the tracks are “sporting” in nature. “It can only happen if you play on sporting tracks and when I mean sporting tracks, it’s balanced one. If there isn’t a bit of something for everyone, then there is no point as the game itself gets affected,” he said giving the example of Ashes. “Ashes was example we got to see everything. Quality batting, top notch fast bowling and spinners also in play. There were players, who were attacking and there were players who are leaving the balls as well. Those elements shouldn’t disappear from Test cricket.” As far as points system is concerned (120 for series clean sweep), Tendulkar finds it as a good move to keep the fans engaged. “Points and all that, team would want to focus on game and nothing else. But what points system does is to keep spectators’ engagement alive. If a team has won first two Test matches, third shouldn’t be a dead rubber. Players will always give their best but how do you keep spectators engaged and involved is also important. “In the last 4 and 5 months, when teams are fighting for the top two slots, the points system will certainly add dimension and I wont be surprised if Test enthusiasts will be engrossed in calculating points,” said Tendulkar.last_img read more

By

first_imgNew Delhi: There will be many more structural reforms by the government in the coming days to push economy to a high growth trajectory, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said on Thursday. In the last five years, the economy has grown at about 7.5 per cent. The country’s growth rate of 8.1 per cent in the last quarter of 2017-18 has fallen to 5 per cent in April-June, 2019-20, Kant said at a World Economic Forum event here. “The RBI and the government have taken a series of measures to take India back to a high trajectory of growth. The RBI has dropped repo rate by about 110 basis points (in 2019 so far) but there are limitations to monetary policy and therefore the government stepped in and took a series of measures,” Kant said. Also Read – Commercial vehicle sales to remain subdued in current fiscal: Icra The government announced a series of economic boosters including capitalisation of public sector banks, merging some of them, package for exports, and bringing down corporate tax rate, he said. “I think many more structural reforms are in the offing. The government has pushed for public sector disinvestment. I can tell you we have pushed for asset monetisation in a very big way. Our belief is that instead of green-field projects, investors must come into brown-field projects,” he said further. Kant also said the government must be a facilitator, a catalyst and should keep itself out of business.last_img read more

By

first_imgMumbai: The Reserve Bank on Thursday enhanced the withdrawal limits for depositors of the scam-hit Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative Bank to Rs 25,000 from Rs 10,000 per account over the next six month. This is the second time the regulator has increased the withdrawal limits since its clamped down on the bank on September 23 when it had capped it a low Rs 1,000 per customer which led to lot of distress and criticism. Since then PMC, which has among the top 10 cooperative banks with a deposit of over Rs 11,600 crore, is under an administrator appointed by the RBI the past management is being probed by the economic offences wing of the city police. “We again reviewed PMC Bank’s liquidity position and with a view to reducing the hardship of depositors, have decided to further enhance the limit for withdrawal to Rs 25,000 (during the pendency of the six months operational restrictions on the bank),” RBI said in a statement. With the above relaxation, more than 70 percent of the depositors of the bank will be able to withdraw their entire account balance, the central bank said as most of its account holders have an average balance of just about Rs 10,000. The total retail despot is worth Rs 915 crore. The regulator further said it has also decided to appoint a three-member committee to assist the administrator JB Bhoria. The Reserve Bank is monitoring the position of the bank very closely and will continue to take necessary steps in the interest of depositors, it added. On September 23, RBI had put regulatory restrictions on the bank after finding irregularities, and misreporting of loans given to real estate developer HDIL, with whom it has an exposure of a whopping 73 percent or Rs 6,500 crore of its total loan book of Rs 8,880 crore. The entire loan has been NPA for the past two-three years. The restriction included barring the bank from lending and accepting fresh deposits. It also superseded the board and the management of the bank and appointed an ex-RBI official as the administrator at the bank. PTIlast_img read more

North Korea decries breakdown of talks US says were good

By

first_imgHelsinki: North Korea’s chief negotiator said that nuclear talks with the US had broken down, but Washington maintained the two sides had “good discussions” in Sweden that it intends to build on in two weeks. The North Korean negotiator, Kim Myong Gil, said the talks in Stockholm on Saturday had “not fulfilled our expectations and broke down. I am very displeased about it.” Speaking outside the North Korean Embassy, he said that negotiations broke down “entirely because the US has not discarded its old stance and attitude” and came to a negotiating table with an “empty hand.” Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince Salman ‘snubbed’ Pak PM Imran, recalled his private jet from US: Report Saturday’s talks were the first between the US and North Korea since the February breakdown of the second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in Vietnam. The two leaders held a brief, impromptu meeting at the Korean border in late June and agreed to restart diplomacy. North Korea has since resumed missile and other weapons tests, including the first test of an underwater-launched missile in three years that fell inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone Wednesday. Also Read – Iraq military admits ‘excessive force’ used in deadly protests State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said Kim’s comments did “not reflect the content or the spirit” of the “good discussions” that took place over 8 hours, adding that the US accepted an invitation from Sweden to return to Stockholm in two weeks to continue discussions. Kim, the North Korean negotiator, said North Korea proposed a suspension of talks until December. The Vietnam summit fell apart because Trump rejected Kim Jong Un’s calls for extensive sanctions relief in return for dismantling his main nuclear complex, a partial disarmament step. North Korea has since demanded the United States come up with mutually acceptable proposals to salvage the nuclear diplomacy by the end of this year. During the Stockholm meeting, Kim Myong Gil said North Korea made it clear that the two countries can discuss next denuclearization steps by North Korea if the United States “sincerely responds” to the previous North Korean measures including the suspension of nuclear and long-range missile tests and closing its underground nuclear testing site. He called the North Korean stance “practical and reasonable.” Kim repeated North Korea’s previous statement that the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula will only be possible when “all hurdles endangering our safety and obstructing our development are removed clearly and undoubtedly.” He said whether North Korea will lift its self-imposed moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile tests is completely up to the United States. North Korea has said it was compelled to develop nuclear weapons to cope with a US military threat. Before entering nuclear disarmament negotiations early last year, North Korea had argued it won’t abandon its nuclear program unless the United States withdraw its 28,500 troops from South Korea, end its military drills with South Korea and take other steps that guarantee North Korea’s security. In a statement, Ortagus said the US delegation “previewed a number of new initiatives that would allow us to make progress in each of the four pillars” of a joint statement issued after Trump and Kim’s first summit in Singapore. “The US and the DPRK will not overcome a legacy of 70 years of war and hostility on the Korean Peninsula through the course of a single Saturday,” Ortagus said. Talks were held at the Villa Elfvik Strand conference facility in Lidingo, an island in the Stockholm archipelago located northeast of the capital, Swedish news agency TT said. It added that Kim Miyong Gil arrived on Thursday while US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun came on Friday. Because the US does not have official diplomatic relations with North Korea, Sweden has often acted as a bridge between Washington and Pyongyanglast_img read more

armed policeman for protection Hindu businessman Varun Singhal is provided with armed security to run his kirana store at Begumpura Bazar in Kairana Firstpost/Tufail Ahmad While the criminals demand extortion from members of all communities and murder people for diverse reasons it is predominantly the Hindus who have suffered in Kairana It is true that there are cases of Muslims such as Dr Asifa leaving Kairana due to extortion demands but most of these cases have happened in the months after Hukum Singh the local MP raised the issue of the exodus of Hindus There is a belief amongst many in the area that incidents of rangdari against Muslims were engineered to kill the argument that only Hindus were fleeing "A small wound becomes a big wound spreading to the whole body" observes Sudhir Chaudhary a journalist who sees a dangerous mix of politics religion and demography "Even a minor case cannot be registered against Muslim criminals by the police in Kairana who work under pressure from the ruling party MLA Nahid Hussain the patron-in-chief of the local criminals" If the police were to act against Muslims a mob will lay siege to the police station "The problem is that when the community’s population becomes big police come under pressure of Muslim mobs" says Chaudhary adding that a purely criminal issue becomes a Hindu-Muslim issue in which no action can be taken against Muslims Chaudhry notes that extortion was systematically demanded against owners of cinemas and other Hindu businesses over the years and "when a dozen such cases happened people realised that the town was being emptied of Hindus" Earlier Hindus and Muslims lived together peacefullyfor years so what changed "The population of Muslims rose" responds Chaudhary In the nearby town of Muzaffarnagar I met a group of doctors One of them says "If the police have to arrest a criminal hiding in the Muslim locality of Muzaffarnagar they cannot do this If they try to enter the locality they will need a battalion of cops" This behaviour of Muslim localities is not unique or limited to Muzaffarnagar and becomes consequential when the population isas high as in Kairana In Muzaffarnagar senior journalist Amir Ansari who now runs a computer training institute in the Muslim locality of Khalapar says that during the 2013 riots the Indian army arrived like farishtas (angels) thereby preventing lots of killings Ansari has devised his own response to vande matram (I praise the motherland) which he calls vande eishwaram (I praise the God) because he says Muslims cannot worship land Vande eishwaram very effectively incorporates the idea of Ummah the global Muslim nation Ansari notes that the GT Road in Muzaffarnagar divides the city between Hindus and Muslims with the west of the road consisting ofMuslim areas such as Khalapar and the eastern side being a predominantly Hindu area "Three partitions have occurred in India so far" Ansari says adding that the 1947 was the first the second being the aftermath of the Babri mosque demolition in Ayodhya in 1992 – causing an intellectual partition between Hindus and Muslims – and the third partition happening after the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013 "As a result of the Muzaffarnagar riots the batwara (partition) expanded to nearby villages In a single village Hindus and Muslims are living separately" Ansari notes adding that be it Muzaffarnagar or Delhi the educated Muslims were moving away from the Hindu-dominated areas Hindus too he adds do not like to live in the Muslim-dominated areas Before travelling to Muzaffarnagar I met journalists Hasan Khalid and Naveen Patel in Aligarh "Aligarh Hindustan-Pakistan banta ja raha hai (Aligarh is becoming India-Pakistan ie a boundary line between Hindus and Muslims in the city)" says Khalid Over thedecades Hindus and Muslims have isolated from each other because of riots Patel remarked that many Hindu families wereleaving the localities around Babri Mandi in Aligarh "In 11 years of my journalistic career I haven’t come across cases of Muslims migrating to other places (due to insecurity)" Patel claims The nature of the partition need not always be territorial or define international borders India is heading towards multiple partitions in the midst of its cities and regions Conversations with various people across western Uttar Pradesh point to the ministry of home affairs (MHA) as a possible source of these ‘partitions’ thereby posing a direct threat to the integrity of India Although these divisions are rooted in the political behaviour of a religious community almost everyone sees the root of these partitions in the failing rule of law Part One:Separatism and integration among Muslims inthe time of Uttar Pradesh elections Part Two:Secularism versus communalism at election time Part Three:Is rise of religiosity on AMU campus a precursor to another ‘Partition’ Part Four:Should taxpayers be funding AMU’s imams muezzins theology department
